To import the dates, just go to Calendar Settings, then Calendar tab, choose to Import calendar and upload the following file: WC.ics

There is a handy, little tool that can easily solve this. Some of you might be aware of it, but for those who have never heard of it: I heartily recommend Time and Date’s Time Zone Converter. This tool works pretty straightforward: enter a time/date and a city, and Time Zone Converter will calculate the time/date for a different city.

For instance, my client in Prague wants me to deliver a translation on April 24 at 8:00. I’m in Chicago. So I enter:

QA check on an unclean Word file

If you’re already familiar with SDL Edit. Here’s a simplified list of steps.

• 1. Save the unclean Word file as an RTF file. Close the file.
• 2. From SDL Edit select File>New translation.
• 3. Set the settings, open the RTF unclean file and select Paragraph in Segmentation Rules.
• 4. Save the ITD file.
• 5. Add the Multiterm Termbase.
• 6. Go to Tools>QA Check and select the options to check. Create a log file and run the QA Check.
• 7. Click on View to see the report and correct the translation as needed.
• 8. Save the ITD file.
• 9. Create the corrected unclean Word file (*.RTF). Go to File>Create Translation.
• 10. (Optional) Open the RTF file and Save it as a Word file (*.doc).

Here’s what I wrote then:

QuickSearches

By far one of the best Firefox features. Quicksearches allows the user to assign keywords shortcuts in order to perform searches, so instead of opening a web site, type the term and click on Search, Go, etc, the query can be done directly from the address Toolbar. For instance, instead of going to the KudoZ page, entering the term I’m looking for and hit search, I just type ‘kz [whatever term I'm looking for]‘ and the page is automatically directed to the results. It saves a lot of time. In order to create a Quick Search entry, place the cursor on the search field, right-click and select ‘Add keyword for this search’, the keyword is bookmarked. Tip: By default, the Quicksearch Bookmark is stored with the rest of the Bookmark, but I prefer to store it in a folder named Quicksearches to keep them organized.

Some of my Quicksearches are: the Blue Board – bb, KudoZ – kz, Word Reference English to Spanish – ws, WordReference Spanish to English – wd, Acronym Finder – a, DRAE – e, hesaurus – t, etc. The key is to use a keyword that is going to be easier to remember.

I thought of this feature when I read a post on Twitter about a website where the results from both the DRAE (Diccionario de la Real Academia Española) and RAE’s DPD (Diccionario panhispánico de dudas) can be brought up using one single search via the Academia Costarricense de la Lengua. The post was originally twittered by Elizabeth Sánchez and later by Pablo Muñoz Sánchez. Additionally, the cursor can be positioned automatically in the URL bar using a simple shortcut: CTRL+L. In my case, my Smart Keyword is ‘r’, so now I only have to press CTRL+L and r plus the term I’m looking for and that’s it.

Búsquedas rápidas

De lejos una de las mejores funciones de Firefox. Las ‘Búsquedas rápidas’ permiten que el usuario pueda asignar accesos directos con palabras claves [o letras] para que, en vez ir a la página, ingresar el término y hacer clic en Buscar, Ir, etc., la búsqueda se puede hacer directamente desde la barra de direcciones. Por ejemplo, en vez de ir a la página de los KudoZ, escribir el término que estoy buscando y hacer clic en Buscar, solamente tengo que ingresar ‘kz [el término para buscar]‘ y la página con los resultados se abre automáticamente. Ahorra un montón de tiempo. Para crear una ‘Búsqueda rápida’, colocar el cursor en el campo de la búsqueda, hacer clic con el botón secundario y seleccionar ‘Agregar palabra clave para esta búsqueda’; así, la palabra clave queda guardada. Consejo: Las ‘Búsquedas rápidas’ se almacenan con los demás marcadores, pero yo prefiero organizarlas en una carpeta a la que le puse ‘Búsquedas rápidas’.

Algunas de mis ‘Búsquedas rápidas’ son: Blue Board – bb, KudoZ – kz, Word Reference inglés a español – ws, WordReference español a inglés – wd, Acronym Finder – a, DRAE – e, Thesaurus.com – t, etc. Lo importante es usar una palabra clave que sea fácil de recordar.

Me acordé de esta función cuando leí una entrada en Twitter sobre una página web que te permite obtener los resultados del DRAE (Diccionario de la Real Academia Española) y del DPD (Diccionario panhispánico de dudas) a través de una sola búsqueda, gracias a la Academia Costarricense de la Lengua. Seriously?

Is it machine translation? Crowdsourcing? Back-translation? Maybe all of the above, but these subtitles are as funny (and intelligible) as they can get. Not even a professional translator could decipher that.

I took the quote above from a slideshow that The Huffington Post has compiled and it has some of the most hilarious subtitles I’ve seen:

Another study by NEC concluded about text editing tasks: “… both the 24-inch widescreen and 20-inch dual screens were significantly more productive than the 20-inch single monitor configuration in completing these text tasks.” And: “With the costs of larger LCD displays falling, the smaller, (less than 19-inch) monitor is no longer justified in terms of productivity returns and worker well-being… Based on performance and preference from this study, large widescreen or multiple monitor configurations are recommended for use in any situation where multiple documents of information are an ordinary part of the work.” The same report showed a Return of Investment of 600% in certain work environments.

It is also important to note that many studies show that the increase in productivity decreases with monitors that are 26 inches or larger.

Having multiple monitors also has its disadvantages; mainly, space problems. But if you have the space, I say go for it. The only thing needed is a video card that allows the use of multiple monitors or one display adapter (like the ones made by EVGA) per monitor.

Once the multiple monitors are installed, navigating throughout the extended display can be tricky. A simple way to manage all the monitors and windows (even for a single monitor set-up) is through a simple but very useful utility called  reSizer. It enables keyboard shortcuts to switch, focus, move, resize and change other window properties in a fast and intuitive way without even touching the mouse. Some of my favorite reSizer shortcuts are:

• Win + Arrows : Move window.
• Win + NumPad 0 :  Maximize / Restore
• Win + NumPad . :  Minimize
• Win + Backspace : Move window to the next monitor.
• Win + Ctrl + Arrows : Resize window.

• Win + NumPad 1 : Move window to the lower-left corner.
• Win + NumPad 2 : Move window to the lower-center. 
• Win + NumPad 3 : Move window to the lower-right corner.
• Win + NumPad 4 : Move window to the middle-left side.
• Win + NumPad 5 : Center window on screen.
• Win + NumPad 6 : Move window to the middle-right side.
• Win + NumPad 7 : Move window to the upper-left corner.
• Win + NumPad 8 : Move window to the upper-center.
• Win + NumPad 9 : Move window to the upper-right corner.

Windows 7 includes new and old window-management shortcuts. By the way, some of these shortcuts will also work in Windows Vista. Having reSizer in Windows 7 is a bit buggy and disables some of the Win7 functionality. I currently use the Win7 shortcuts because I love the tile shortcut (Win + Left/Right) but I miss the positioning shortcuts (Win+NumPad 1…0) of reSizer.

• Win + Up: Maximize the current window
• Win + Down: Minimize the window/Restore the window if it’s maximized
• Win + Left/Right Arrow: Dock the current window to the left/right half of the monitor
• Shift + Win + Up arrow: Maximize the active window vertically.
• Shift + Win + Left/Right arrows: Move the window to the monitor on the left or right.
• Win + Home: Minimize all but the current window
• Win + T: Cycle through applications on taskbar (showing its live preview)
• Alt + Esc: Cycle through all open windows
• Win + Space: All windows become transparent so you can see through to the desktop.
• Alt + Tab: Switch to previous active window
• Alt + F4: Close the active window
• Win + Tab: Flip 3D
• Ctrl + Win + Tab: Persistent Flip 3D
• Win + M: Minimize all open windows
• Win + Shift – M: Undo all window minimization
• Win + D: Toggle the desktop

Another favorite multiple-monitor application of mine is DisplayFusion. It enables additional features like extra shortcuts, window-snapping and multiple-monitors wallpaper configurations. It can even find desktop wallpapers from Google or Flickr. The extra-shortcuts are particularly useful for non-users of Windows 7 because it enables the new Win7 shortcuts and adds some more. Just like reSizer and the new Win7 shortcuts, many of these shortcuts are very useful even for single-monitor set-ups. The DisplayFusion shortcuts are:

• Ctrl + Win + Q:  Move window to center of monitor
• Ctrl + Win + S:  Move window to center of monitor and size to 75%
• Ctrl + Win + X:  Move window to next monitor
• Ctrl + Win + A:  Move window to next monitor and maximize
• Ctrl + Win + Z:   Move window to next monitor and size proportionally
• Ctrl + Win + W:  Move window to previous monitor
• Ctrl + Win + E:   Move window to previous monitor and maximize
• Ctrl + Win + D:   Move window to previous monitor and size proportionally
• Ctrl + Win + R:   Next random wallpaper image (Pro Only)
• Ctrl + Win + Down:   Size and move window to bottom side of monitor
• Ctrl + Win + Left:   Size and move window to left side of monitor
• Ctrl + Win + Right:  Size and move window to right side of monitor
• Ctrl + Win + Up:  Size and move window to top side of monitor
• Ctrl + Win + Tilde:   Span window across all monitors

This is a screenshot of my Beatles multiple-monitor wallpaper. I’ve included a picture of my monitors; sorry about the quality, I used my camera phone. My set-up includes my laptop’s 15-inch monitor (for dictionaries, glossaries and QA sheets for localization projects), a 19-inch monitor (for Thunderbird, Firefox sometimes, source files and project guides) and a 24-inch monitor which I use for my main application which is SDL Studio but I also use it with Firefox. Most of the times I don’t need the third 15-inch monitor, but when I do, having multiple monitors noticeably increases my productivity and improves the quality of my projects in less time. And for us translators and freelancers, it’s all about productivity and quality.

I’ve been using Translation Office 3000 for several years and it’s one of the best investments I made. It not only creates invoices and handles payments, but it’s a great and easy-to-use project management tool for translators. It literally saves me hours every month on administrative tasks.

Multiterm Termbase

Unlike previous versions, the new Multiterm 2009 allows the user to select where to store the termbases. In my opinion’, working directly with Multiterm 2009 termbases is much better and allows more flexibility over the termbases.

Converting a Multiterm 2007 termbase (mdb file) into a Multiterm 2009 termbase (sdltb file) is very easy to do. But since the new termbases create additional files (just like Trados TM’s), the best approach is to place each termbase into a single folder. Here’s how to do it:

1. Open the Multiterm 2007 termbase (mbd).
2. Export it as a Multiterm xml file.
3. Create a new Multiterm 2009 termbase (using the old Multiterm 2007 termbase as a template).
4. Check the settings of the new termbase. This step is not really necessary since all the settings should be the same as the old termbase.
5. Import the xml file (as Fast import).

And that’s it.

It doesn’t even take two minutes to convert each termbase. I created a video tutorial of the whole process:
