One of the pieces of software I find most useful when I translate is Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I’ve been using it for years since version 9 or 10. It allows me to dictate with a high accuracy and flexibility, avoiding potential typos and misspellings. It also helps me proofread long texts without having to print out hundreds of pages. The text-to-speech feature dictates everything which I can just check against the translation on the computer (or a Kindle, if you have one). Overall, Dragon allows me to translate and proofread between 20% and 40% faster, in my opinion, more accurately.

Now Newegg is having a sale on the Home and Premium versions of Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11 (English). I assume it’s because Dragon 12 has just been released. As far as I know, this offer is available only in the US using rebates. I recommend you get the Premium version so you can use extra features like:

Import and export of custom word lists (if you’re working with a particular terminology or glossary, you can just import it)

Text-to-speech recognition (so you can use it to proofread documents)

User profiles (so you can import and backup your settings)

Support for Bluetooth devices

The Premium version has more features but these are the ones that I consider the most helpful when I translate. One thing you have to keep in mind is that you need a quality microphone to get good results, a $20 mic or the included one is not going to do it–it’ll work but you will spend more time correcting than translating.

As translators and freelancers, we have the great opportunity to work with people from all over the world. However, this could be problematic when it comes to setting a deadline or, even worse, scheduling a conference call with several people in different parts of the world: which time? yours, mine, GMT?.

There is a handy, little tool that can easily solve this. Some of you might be aware of it, but for those who have never heard of it: I heartily recommend Time and Date’s Time Zone Converter. This tool works pretty straightforward: enter a time/date and a city, and Time Zone Converter will calculate the time/date for a different city.

For instance, my client in Prague wants me to deliver a translation on April 24 at 8:00. I’m in Chicago. So I enter:

And the result is:

It’s very easy to use and extremely helpful. Time and Date’s Time Zone Converter can be found at this link.

This video tutorial shows how easy it is to perform a Quality Assurance check and a Terminology QA Check on a SDL Trados unclean Word file. The QA Check will analyze SDLX compatible files (like SDL Trados unclean Word files) against a Termbase to make sure the terms in the termbase were used in the translation. The QA Check can find potential errors and issues like missing or partially missing translations, inconsistent translations, multiple dots or spaces, etc. The tool will produce an report with a list of all the issues found. The list is interactive so clicking on the report item will jump to the respective segment where the issue was found. The files can be corrected directly from SDL Edit (included in the Trados Suite) and saved as an unclean file.

Click for the video tutorial and a simple list of 10 steps.

QA check on an unclean Word file

If you’re already familiar with SDL Edit. Here’s a simplified list of steps.

1. Save the unclean Word file as an RTF file. Close the file.

2. From SDL Edit select File>New translation.

3. Set the settings, open the RTF unclean file and select Paragraph in Segmentation Rules.

4. Save the ITD file.

5. Add the Multiterm Termbase.

6. Go to Tools>QA Check and select the options to check. Create a log file and run the QA Check.

7. Click on View to see the report and correct the translation as needed.

8. Save the ITD file.

9. Create the corrected unclean Word file (*.RTF). Go to File>Create Translation.

10. (Optional) Open the RTF file and Save it as a Word file (*.doc).
