Seriously?

Is it machine translation? Crowdsourcing? Back-translation? Maybe all of the above, but these subtitles are as funny (and intelligible) as they can get. Not even a professional translator could decipher that.

I took the quote above from a slideshow that The Huffington Post has compiled and it has some of the most hilarious subtitles I’ve seen:

Machine-translation renders hilarious results and butchers a Beatles song in the meantime.

Machine translation usually produces funny results. But machine back-translation[*] is absolutely hilarious!

Translation Party is a website that uses machine translation to “translate” a phrase repeatedly until it reaches its ‘equilibrium’. It means that a phrase is machine-translated from English into Japanese, back into English, back into Japanese, repeatedly, until the result is the same English machine-translation, and that is equilibrium. Not all phrases reach that pure, disastrous level of machine-translation equilibrium, but they all are horrendous.

I decided to put Translation Party to the test with ‘Hey Jude’ by The Beatles. The sad, sad result is after the break:

Translation Party

Hey Jude

[1]

ODAJUDO, you may feel bad at the beginning of her sad songs for me.

[2]

Hey Jude, in the minutes of her fear of my skin, you can start to improve for her.

[3]

On your shoulder, at any point in time, my pain, feel the control of the world and Jude.

[4]

World, I’m stupid is a bit cold and cool music.

[5]

If you can start, Hey Jude, and now she (BITTOJUDO please) instead of, or despair, I will get the memory to improve her mind was known.

[6]

HEIJUDO wait to start another run.

[7]

Instead, you know. Jude is a bit of shoulder movement.

[8]

Jude and I, poor skin, if not all, better, best songs can be used to improve the impaired memory of her! , Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Nana. Hey Jude, Jude, Jude, Jude, Jude, yeah, yeah! , Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Nana. Hey Jude.

And the original:

Original

Hey Jude

[1]

Hey Jude don’t make it bad, Take a sad song and make it better,
Remember, to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.

[2]

Hey Jude don’t be afraid,
You were made to go out and get her,
The minute you let her under your skin,
Then you begin to make it better.

[3]

And anytime you feel the pain,
Hey Jude refrain,
Don’t carry the world upon your shoulders.

[4]

For well you know that it’s a fool,
Who plays it cool,
By making his world a little colder.

[5]

Hey Jude don’t let me down,
You have found her now go and get her,
Remember (Hey Jude) to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.

[6]

So let it out and let it in
Hey Jude begin,
You’re waiting for someone to perform with.

[7]

And don’t you know that it’s just you.
Hey Jude, you’ll do,
The movement you need is on your shoulder.

[8]

Hey Jude, don’t make it bad,
Take a sad song and make it better,
Remember to let her under your skin,
Then you’ll begin to make it all better, better, better, better,
better, better, better, ah!
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na.
Hey Jude, Jude , Jude, Jude, Jude, yeah, yeah!
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na.
Hey Jude..
