QA check on an unclean Word file

If you’re already familiar with SDL Edit. Here’s a simplified list of steps.

• 1. Save the unclean Word file as an RTF file. Close the file.
• 2. From SDL Edit select File>New translation.
• 3. Set the settings, open the RTF unclean file and select Paragraph in Segmentation Rules.
• 4. Save the ITD file.
• 5. Add the Multiterm Termbase.
• 6. Go to Tools>QA Check and select the options to check. Create a log file and run the QA Check.
• 7. Click on View to see the report and correct the translation as needed.
• 8. Save the ITD file.
• 9. Create the corrected unclean Word file (*.RTF). Go to File>Create Translation.
• 10. (Optional) Open the RTF file and Save it as a Word file (*.doc).

Multiterm Termbase

Unlike previous versions, the new Multiterm 2009 allows the user to select where to store the termbases. In my opinion’, working directly with Multiterm 2009 termbases is much better and allows more flexibility over the termbases.

Converting a Multiterm 2007 termbase (mdb file) into a Multiterm 2009 termbase (sdltb file) is very easy to do. But since the new termbases create additional files (just like Trados TM’s), the best approach is to place each termbase into a single folder. Here’s how to do it:

1. Open the Multiterm 2007 termbase (mbd).
2. Export it as a Multiterm xml file.
3. Create a new Multiterm 2009 termbase (using the old Multiterm 2007 termbase as a template).
4. Check the settings of the new termbase. This step is not really necessary since all the settings should be the same as the old termbase.
5. Import the xml file (as Fast import).

And that’s it.

It doesn’t even take two minutes to convert each termbase. I created a video tutorial of the whole process:

You will be prompted to merge the terms or not. Then press F12 to save the changes and that’s it.

For instance, using TO3000 and shortcuts, I keep all my databases (glossaries, TMs, termbases, project references, etc) in one single place, regardless of their physical location. I just add shortcuts of their folders in a Client-specific folder automatically created by TO3000 at the moment the client is added. The next time I want to access any of those files, I just go to the Project>Folders tab and find it in the Clients Folder, right by the Project Folder.

This is particularly useful for those translators who use a separate Translation Memory or Glossary for each client or topic. There’s no need to spend any time trying to find the client’s files, they’re all available from one single location.

The first step is to configure TO3000 to create a Databases folder: go to Settings>Advanced>Folders>Client Folder (tab)>Add folder. It could be any name: Databases, Reference, etc.

Once a new client is added to the database, several folders will be created, included the new added folder (Databases, Reference, etc.) The next step is really easy, just create a shortcut of each TM, glossary, etc. and move it to the Database Folder.

TO3000 displays all the related folders next to the project folders, including all the shortcuts to the TM’s, glossaries, etc. The actual files remain in their own location.

I’ve been using SDL Trados Studio for a while now and so far, I really liked it. The release candidate still has plenty of bugs, but overall it’s very usable. It’s a shame because, in my opinion, it’s the best product SDL has launched and it fixes many of the productivity issues of previous versions.

Anyway, since many of the commands are new, I compiled a list of all the shortcuts in the Editor view. I find it very useful; I hope somebody else will too. I uploaded two lists: one with all the Editor shortcuts and the other one has the most common shortcuts highlighted.

Edit: SDL has released a Show Shortcut list plugin that can be added to the toolbar. I haven’t tried it yet but sounds really helpful.

Also, SDL acknowledged that their policy about SDL Trados 2007 and SDL Trados 2007 Suite was a mistake and they have corrected the course, so I removed my comment about not upgrading.
